Tales of the North - Barbour
Barbour is a massive part of South Shields' heritage, so when I was given the chance to create a sub-brand, I focused my efforts on celebrating the rich history and the many stories that my home town has to tell.

The idea is to make a sub-brand that sells items that are rooted in South Shields' history, with each piece having its own story to tell.

Brand Direction
The brand direction was very much inspired by my trip to the South Shields Museum & art gallery. While visiting, they were running the 'scran exhibition,' which was a showcase of local legends in food, including Greggs, Dicksons, Toney Minchella's ice cream, Wrights Biscuits and many more. Going there was truly a trip to an earlier time.
V1
This did feel like it was a part of the mood board I created from my trip, but I was having second thoughts as to whether changing Barbour's logo was appropriate.
V2
The font still felt appropriate, so I adapted it into the sub brand name while using the original Barbour logo. It was on the right lines but something about it felt to modern and clean for a heritage-based project.
V3 - Final
Changing the colour to off-white made it not only look more dated, but also implied sand, which, South Shields is a sea-side town so that felt appropriate. To get the textured edges, I hand-drew over the letterforms in Procreate. I also decided to remove the harsh shadow as it was really clashing with the texture I'd implemented.
Patch Designs
Westoe Brewery, an old South Shields Brewery that closed down in 1924
The Ghosts of Marsden, the grotto at Marsden Beach is supposedly haunted by the ghost of its former owners.
Colman's Fish and Chips, an old ticket from the award-winning family-owned fish and chip shop.
The Tyne Lifeboat, South Shields is the birth place of both the first and second lifeboats. The one in the patch is the second, and saved more than 1000 lives in its 60 years of service.
Wrights Biscuits, the biscuit factory in South Shields that made sweet treats for WW2 soldiers.
Photoshoot
With the patches designed, I attached them to a Barbour denim jacket and me and @wastefulmedia took to South Shields to get our shots. She was an absolute pleasure to work with.
I then get straight to editing the photos in Adobe Lightroom, using 3 different colour grade styles each resembling one of the three main colours of the sub-brand.

Verdict
What an amazing way to celebrate my home town, doing a project with a South Shields company with a South Shields photographer, it was an absolute pleasure and I'm so happy with how it all came together.
